I'm a Hooker Now

Word play!

I don't know what it was that inspired me, but a month ago I made the decision that I was going to learn how to crochet.  I immediately went to Joann Fabrics, bought myself the variety pack of crochet needles and a skein of yarn.

Susan Bates Crochet Hook Set.  My set is rainbow colors & way more fun than this.
My timing could not have been more perfect.  The archivist where I work informed me that she had recently started a monthly "Fiber Time" gathering.  It is a knitting/sewing/fiber working get together for anyone in the area to show off what they're working on, get advice, and enjoy each other's company.  The archivists enthusiastically offered to teach me how to crochet at the next meeting.  As I told her I'd definitely be there, a part of me wondered if I'd turned into an adorable 90 year old recently.  Boy, am I glad I ignored that annoying part of my brain.

Check out the pattern after the jump...

She gave me a simple scarf to make.  I have no idea how to write a crochet pattern, so here is my plain language explanation:

Chain 50.
Row 1: Triple crochet into the 6th chain from the end.  chain 1.  triple crochet 1 chain over. repeat until the end of the row.  Chain 5.
Row 2 and beyond: Triple crochet into top of first triple crochet in previous row.  Chain 1.  repeat until the end of the row.  Continue until the scarf is as long as you want it to be.

If you want to crochet this scarf yourself, I can get a formal pattern from my crochet Yoda.  She made it up on the spot, so there was no pattern to go off of.  I crocheted until my skein was spent, so it's not a long scarf.

I chose to sew on a button, so it could be worn as a cowl, as well as a scarf.

I spent a good 15 minutes in the button aisle at Joann's.  There are so many options!  Pretty, colorful buttons!  My button supply may have grown exponentially after this trip.  Yay, buttons!  (I may or may not have been mumbling to myself during this 15 minute period.  Probably why no one joined me in the button aisle...)

It's a little too warm in Florida for a thick scarf, so this beauty (along with a few others I plan on making) will be under someone's Christmas tree in a few months.

  4. Mo, it's beautiful! The color and the button are great. I'm impressed, and would like to get into crocheting eventually. But as you know, I still have to get serious about sewing...

  5. Thanks everyone! Amanda - I've found crocheting to be 1000x easier and more fun than sewing. I can sit and watch tv while I crochet. Hope Corpus is treating you guys well & wedding planning is oging well!
